Native leaders will speak about mascots tonight

My friends Sikowis Nobiss and Jessica Engelking from the Great Plains Action Society (GPAS) will be speaking during a Zoom meeting at 7:00 PM tonight, September 2, 2026, about racist mascots.

This will be the regular monthly meeting of the Decolonial Repair Network (DRN), which was created by Sikowis and Eric Anglada, who lives on a Catholic Worker farm in southwest Wisconsin. The DRN was setup specifically to help non-Native people learn about Native people and their work, about colonialism, and to raise funds for this work.

It is important for non-Native people to not burden Native people to explain these things. But to also be sensitive to opportunities when Native people are willing to speak. Tonight will be one of those occasions.

This is an example of the idea of channels into knowledge, which this website is about. An opportunity for non-Native people to build relationships with Native people, although remotely in this case.

Thanks to my relationships with people at GPAS, I have been blessed to begin to form a channel into Native knowledge.

Early on, I asked Sikowis what I could do to help her and GPAS. She told me I should work to inform non-Native people about Native history and views. I’ve done that by writing on my blogs and attending GPAS events over the years.
