I sense that my recent writings might be a bit confusing. I’ve been making up and exploring these questions myself as I’ve been trying to understand how and why I was never taught the history and significance, today, of Quakers’ involvement in the Indian boarding schools. I’ve been led to believe each of us must answer these three questions now if we want to begin to build authentic relationships with Native people.
The questions are:
- What did not reach me? — the content (the specific withheld knowledge).
Trap: collecting tragic facts as if knowing were the work. - Why did it not reach me? — the mechanism (who withheld it, and why).
Trap: absolution — “not my fault” as a resting place. - What am I called to do now? — the obligation (the “and therefore, this”).
Trap: skipping here (performance), or never arriving.
