Understanding the difference between “what was withheld” and “what did not reach me” is necessary if you want to explore the history of the relationships between Quakers and Native peoples.
I hope more Friends are led into this uncomfortable history, because that understanding is essential for work now with Native peoples. I don’t want to continue the silence I grew up with, and I want young Friends to have some grounding in this history as they begin their own work for justice.
Yesterday’s article, “What Was Withheld from Us?” covered a lot of material, and some of the ideas in it are unfamiliar to most people. So I’ve been making educational materials. Three of them follow.
The Static
The Static is a graphic I created about building a channel by establishing a relationship. Because the only way to begin to learn about what was withheld from you is by forming a relationship with someone who has that knowledge, and is willing to share it.
