A channel is
A relationship strong enough to carry knowledge across a boundary is what I call a channel — and I realize that I have been building channels all my life.

- A relationship. Not a resource, not a text, not a database, not an app. A channel is made of people who know each other.
- Strong enough. There is a threshold. Being in the same room does not clear it. Being on the same mailing list does not clear it. Something has to have been built, and the building is the part that costs.
- To carry knowledge. Not a friendship for its own sake. It is a conduit. Something travels.
- Across a boundary. Between cultures, between communities, between generations. Where there is no boundary you do not need a channel — you need a library.
The image it comes from
Knowledge can be thought of as water flowing through channels. Water doesn’t reach where there are no channels — not because the water isn’t there, but because the channel hasn’t been built. That is what what did not reach us means.

Where the image breaks is the more interesting part. An irrigation ditch runs one way, downhill, and is unaltered by whatever passes through it. A channel between people runs both directions, and it changes both ends.
Why a channel is needed at all
A reasonable person asks: if the history is real and the books exist, why not simply read the books? Because there is more than one kind of not-knowing, and only one of them is repaired by reading. Knowledge that is missing is found by study — nobody stands between you and it. Knowledge that is withheld is a different condition entirely.
You cannot study your way across a withholding. A withholding is not a gap in the information — it is a break in a relationship.

The only thing that repairs a broken relationship is to restore one. That is what a channel is for, and it is why the sequence below cannot be hurried.
What follows is the order in which it actually happens.
The order things happen in
0 A leading. Something stirs in the one who does not yet know. It comes from outside the picture and it has no name yet.
1 Two people, and a boundary between them. One holds knowledge the other does not. It has been carried, at cost, all along.
2 Something crosses. A story, an invitation, an encounter. It reaches them and surrounds them.
3 The Gap opens, and the building begins. They now know what is missing. The stirring could not name it; the story that crossed can.
4 The channel opens the rest of the way. Invitation, presence, shared work and cost. Years of it, and the second half is slower than the first.
5 And it runs both ways. A one-way channel is extraction.

Three things to notice
- Nothing is transferred when the story crosses. The cloud that surrounds them is beautiful and useless. A story opens a door; it cannot carry what is on the far side of it.
- Knowledge travels as soon as the channel is open, not once it is finished. It moves along whatever has been opened so far, carrying as much as that will hold.
- It has reached them only when the channel connects. A channel that stops short has not arrived, however much is moving along it.
How to read the colors
- Gold – The knowledge itself. It is in the first figure from the beginning, and it is the last thing to reach the second.
- Teal – Everything that is not the knowledge — the story that crosses, the channel, and the labor and support that travel back.
- Pale white – The leading. Its own color on purpose, so it cannot be mistaken for the knowledge arriving early.
